In spring 1967, in Palo Alto, California, history teacher Ron Jones conducted an experiment with his class of 15-year-olds to understand how Germans could become Nazis. In a matter of days the experiment began to spiral out of control. Ordinary students became aggressive zealots, bodyguards and informers. The one sophomore who refused to join was banished and shunned.
